Br’er Abbott, designed and built by the Minneapolis architecture firm III AD, is the firm’s interpretation of urban modernism—a warm and inviting blend of Prairie style, Danish, and Japanese sensibilities. These influences play beautifully together throughout the entire house: In the open floor plan of the first level, with its views to gardens and a courtyard. In the carefully placed windows, which allow light to stream in while also maintaining privacy. In natural materials like bamboo, cork, and hand-carved cherry, which invite touch and soothe the senses. And in the light-filled stair tower that connects the floors and leads to the “roof house” and rooftop deck, for spectacular views of the Linden Hills neighborhood.
There is another influence that informed every aspect of the house’s design and construction: sustainability. Br’er Abbott was built following the highest standards of “green” building practices and will be one of the first homes in the Twin Cities to earn a Silver rating in the prestigious LEED certification system.
Oh, and about the name of the house. Br’er Abbott is a play on the “Br’er Rabbit” stories by Uncle Remus. As you might recall, Br’er Rabbit was always a step ahead of Br’er Fox. It’s a fitting analogy for a house that is on the cutting edge of modern architecture and green design—definitely a step (or two or three) ahead.
